More Than Just a Meal: Stories, Stir-frys, and New Friends

Tonight at St. Joseph’s was one of those nights that hits you right in the heart. We started with over 50 boxes of donated tofu and 6-8bags of fresh veggies – my “Asian genes” kicked in, and we went with a big Tofu and Veggie stir-fry with oyster sauce! We paired it with donated sausages for a little East-meets-West comfort food, and it turned out amazing and beautiful.

I couldn’t have done this without my friends Kathy, Lucy, Yvonne, Teresa, Antia, Maria, and Sarah. From peeling and dicing all that garlic and onion to the final stir-fry, they were incredible. A special shout-out to Lucy – she spent so much time at that big iron wok that I had to keep passing her tissues to wipe away the sweat. She was an absolute rockstar! We ended up cranking out 8 or 9 massive batches to make sure all 200 of our guests were fed.

And the special guest of the night? I’ll take a little credit here – I brought along a big bag of kimchi from H Mart. Watching everyone’s faces light up when I offered it, and seeing the excitement from people trying it for the very first time, was the highlight of my night. When you’re trying to feed 200+ people, sometimes you just have to pray for another “loaves and fishes” moment, and God always provides!

Beyond the food, it was so special to catch up with familiar faces and hear how they’ve been doing, and to welcome a new volunteer who shared stories about his life in Italy and his journey back to Vancouver.

It’s such a powerful reminder of how everything – from the farm to our kitchen to the table—is really just God’s providence at work. I was so moved by the community tonight that I’m designing a new table stand with a meal prayer for us to use every time we sit down together, just to remind us all to:

“Taste and see that the Lord is good.” — Psalm 34:8
