If you had asked me just a few weeks ago how I planned to celebrate my birthday, I probably would have said something simple, maybe a nice dinner, a quiet gathering with my family. But something in my heart nudged me in a different direction.
Instead of being served, I wanted to serve. Instead of receiving, I wanted to give. So, I gathered a group of friends, and together, we cooked a community meal, enough to feed 150 people.
And what unfolded in our kitchen yesterday was nothing short of a miracle.
“The Magic of Community” –
Though people coming to cook are mostly my friends, (we’ve some other volunteers from the church as well and it’s my first time meeting them), we had never cooked together before. So I was seriously thinking, can we make the meal happen without chaos?
Many people know that I’m a kitchen-phobic, so I need to find the “talents” around me. Then one of the biggest surprises came. My friend’s husband. She always joked that he was a “stay-at-home guy” who wasn’t very social. But when she just casually asked him, he said yes. And not just any yes—a “Yes, I’ll be the main chef” kind of yes. The kind that left his wife speechless. (And of course, me too….)
Then there was my another friend, I don’t know what she usually cooks at home, but seems famous for her Portuguese egg tarts. She and her daughter, home for spring break, turned their usual two-dozen batch production at home, now into 200 tarts in the community kitchen. How? Because love multiplies….
And at the last minute, another friend, who I haven’t seen for some time, showed up, with a food-safe certificate shown on her cellphone, ready to serve.
Another friend and I have just finished chopping garlic and ginger, turn around, and, poof! The cutting board was washed and put away. Knives, spoons, dishes, bowls, everything seemed to clean itself. Honestly it wasn’t magic. It was the quiet work of people who just saw what needed to be done and did it. No one asked, no one ordered, it just happened.
But Why All These Could Happen?
Well, I was reminded of something powerful. No Assumptions. Just Open Hearts.
• We assume someone won’t want to help? Well, until they say yes and surprise us all!
• We assume people won’t understand each other? Well, until different languages fill the air, and somehow, we all communicate just fine and the 150 meals are done.
What does it tell us? If we stay open-minded, if we let people show us who they are instead of deciding for them, the world becomes full of possibilities.
“A Table Without Borders”
At the meal, we spoke many languages, English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Tagalog, Malay. Yet, somehow, we understood each other perfectly. Because when kindness is the common language, no words are needed.
You might be wondering, What did we serve? And who were the 150 guests?
Entrée: Miso Soup
Main Dish: Mapo Tofu on Steamed Rice
Dessert: Portuguese Egg Tart
Drinks: Tea, Coffee, and Juice
And the guests? Anyone who needed or wanted a warm meal at a table.
No reservations. No requirements. Just an open door. Some were facing difficulties preparing meals for themselves. Some were struggling to put food on the table. Others? Maybe they just needed a place to feel welcome.
And the truth is, we don’t always need to understand someone’s story to offer them a seat. No assumptions. No judgment. Just a meal shared in dignity, and a space to belong.
Well, I wouldn’t call myself a scholar, but if I had to sum it up, what did we learn together?
• Community isn’t built from the top down. There is no boss here. It grows from the bottom, in the little moments of people coming together.
• Perfection isn’t the goal. Mistakes happen. Things don’t always go as planned. And that’s okay. That’s how we learn.
• Different isn’t wrong. Just because someone does something a different way doesn’t mean it won’t work!
• The most important ingredient? LOVE. It’s not about efficiency or effectiveness. It’s about heart.
“More Than a Meal. Many Transformations”….
• The “stay at home gentleman” found his place, cooking for 150 people and opening up to new faces.
• Some guests comforted by the taste of home, felt warmth in every bite, greeted in their home language. Some guests excited about the new flavors going around their taste buds and look forward to more different dishes in the future.
• Teens, who might have spent their spring break on screens, instead found joy in serving food and passing out soup.
• New friendships formed, hands eagerly raised to volunteer next time.
And us? We barely had time to eat. But we didn’t feel hungry. Because what we shared yesterday wasn’t just food.
It was Respect.
It was Openness.
It was Love.
I call them our main ingredients we use at “Recipe of Life”…..
And somehow, that filled us up more than any meal ever could. ![]()
