(Warning —When gratitude overflows, words follow…… 💛)
I spent the whole day reflecting on what “community” truly means, and why even a small gathering like ours yesterday left all of us feeling so full — not just in our stomachs but in our hearts.
From the beginning, many of us wondered what this event would be like.
Would we feel shy? Would it be awkward? Would it be uncomfortable?
But what happened instead was simple and beautiful — a gentle smile, a warm handshake, a short introduction about who we are, what we love about our neighbourhood and Canada, and eventually, a safe space to hear each other’s cultures, stories, and memories behind the dishes our Asian immigrant friends so lovingly prepared.
Slowly the room transformed into a friendship centre, with people already looking for opportunities to grow this community together.
That’s what yesterday felt like.
Firstly, salute to our amazing Asian home chefs who cooked with love and brought food for us to share:
Louise
We literally see a world map in you — UK, Malaysia, Singapore, and now Canada. Yet your Malaysian Curry Chicken stays loyal to its roots — rich, creamy, and comforting without the heat. And your Indonesian Gado Gado carried that familiar Malaysian touch. Hat off to you!
Elle
Your Filipino Sylvanas were the first to disappear — gone in minutes.
And your quote of the night:
“Every time I make it, it’s good — unless I’m in a bad mood.”
We are keeping that one forever.
Ellen
Your Taiwanese fried rice noodles were soft and tender, reminding me of the breakfasts I used to grab during my busy accountancy days. A taste of nostalgia.
Jenny
Your Sichuan noodles! The homemade sauce of sesame oil, garlic, and peppercorn made every strand burst with flavor. That same sauce could transform almost anything — a true magic mix.
Sara
Your Indian chickpea curry was absolutely amazing, and your rice carried more flavor than our usual jasmine rice. Now I know your secret — a bit of olive oil, onion, and salt. One big tip straight into my recipe book!
And of course — my humble contributions
Homemade Soy Milk with Miso and Tofu, topped with a little green onion (a little goes a long way!). And dessert — our traditional Chinese Longan Red Date Soup, symbolizing family unity and prosperity. What better way to end the evening?
When I pause and ask myself, “What are we really doing at Recipe of Life?” The answer is simple. We’re all looking for something in common — a space to do what we love, and to share it with others. To cook, to listen, with no judgement. When cooking becomes connection, sharing becomes friendship, and inviting someone to the table becomes an act of love.
And when we do that with open hearts, God takes care of the rest.
And what touched me most was seeing both Asian and non-Asian guests sitting together with no borders between us — no race, no labels, just people sharing food and stories. In those moments, our dishes became more than recipes. They became windows into memories, childhoods, migrations, and hopes. And our guests, regardless of background, leaned in with genuine curiosity to understand a little more about our Asian food stories, and in return, we learned a little more about each other. That is the beauty of a shared table — it makes strangers feel like friends.
We also want to thank 360 Community for offering such a warm and cozy space. The fireplace, the little library, the round tables — it truly felt like home.
Ready for the next round?
I hear you!
December can be cold and busy, but why not try a simple Zoom cook-along together?
Stay tuned — roll up your sleeves, and get your vent fans ready!
With appreciation and a full heart,
