This is the easiest authentic Gado Gado dish that I learned from an Indonesian mom

Every summer, I am always on a look out on some cold dishes and  “Gado Gado” is always on the top of my mind.  Being born and raised in Hong Kong, we have all kinds of the best restaurant in this a big and buzzling city. And there is one Indonesian restaurant, being commented as the best indonestian restaurant in town by the local Indoneians! That’s also the place that my hubby and I used to go for dating, celebrate our special occasions with our family. And Gado Gado is a must-have item in our order.   Love the freshness of the veggies. The tofu puff provdeds that extra different texture,. And of course, the soul of the dish is definitely the sauce.  I can still all the familiar faces of the servers there, who can speak Cantonese with some indonsian accent! Everytime being served by familiar servers feels like home’

I won’t forget this tasty dish even when we moved to Canada. And I did try different recipes of replicating the sauce but nothing is close to that I had from the restaurant.  Until one day, I put up this question in a community group in Vancouver. A neighbour, Kimberley replied quick and told me that her mum is an Indonesian and she said – you can simply mix the peanut butter with soy sauce. That’s it!

Seriously? YES! I tried and vetted!  And would have never forgotten this angelic advice as this simple recipe is now imprinted in my head!

Today, another summer, another warm day, I replicated this recipe again.  Full of gratefulness with the simple Gado Gado sauce from Kimberley. Recalling the good old time with family enjoying all the tasty dishes at our favourite Indonesian Restaurant. Being together enjoying the good food is one of the biggest blessing in life. Being able to make some new connection in the community through food is a bonus!  Don’t be shy to ask around in the community whenever we have our own questions. And don’t be shy to take as many pictures as possible next time when you enjoy your meal with your family. As every dish, every face, every encounter, is a precious memory.
